The recipes I’ve posted each Friday have come to an end. I’ve shared thirty-nine simple, from-scratch recipes this year, and quite frankly … I can’t think of many more. At least for now. So Foodie Friday will morph into a food-centric blog post each week.
This change is exciting for me, especially since my first eBook, First Bites, is coming out NEXT THURSDAY. (Oh yes! The eBooks go on sale at midnight on Oct. 11! Can you tell I’m a little excited?)
Some of my mommy friends have read a review copy of the book (and most of them love it! They really love it!) and the questions have started pouring in. For the near future, I’ll devote Foodie Friday posts to questions that readers are asking after reading First Bites. Today, choke hazards are the concern.
Q: For my children, manmade food AND natural food pose choking risks. What are common food choke hazards for infants and toddlers?
A: In my parenting experience, I’ve noticed that certain children can be more prone to choking. In our family, it was Little Sister. Our girl would choke on ANYTHING. As a result, we had to cut her food into teeny tiny pieces for a long time, as well as do little tricks like peel her apples, only give her the juicy parts of oranges, and break Cheerios into quarters.
You should keep an eye on your little one while he or she is eating, just to be careful. But also beware – some foods are easier to choke on, like:
- Unpeeled apples;
- Whole carrots;
- Dry cereal;
- Whole cherry tomatoes;
- Chewing gum;
- Chunks of cucumbers;
- Whole grapes;
- Hard candy;
- Hot dogs;
- Lettuce;
- Marshmallows;
- Orange slices;
- Peanut butter;
- Peanuts;
- Popcorn;
- Raisins;
- Sausages;
- Snap peas;
- Spinach;
- String cheese;
- Large chunks of food.
