Throughout this week I’ve shared a lot of information about the safety of eye shadows, blushes, and facial powders – typically I think of all of these products as powders, but there are plenty of varieties, including creams, loose powders, and pressed powders.
Many products are safe. Many products also are dangerous. You can expect to find both safe and toxic cosmetics stocked together on store shelves. So how in the world can you find something that won’t harm your health? Enter this week’s Reduce, Reuse & Recycle Challenge.

This week’s challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to find out exactly how safe your eye shadows, blushes and facial powders are. If you don’t own any cosmetics, then your challenge is finished! (That was quick!)
1. If you do own these cosmetics, please retrieve them. Find any and all eye shadows, blushes and facial powders that you own.
2. If you have just a tiny amount left, recycle the product at the nearest Origins retails store or makeup counter.
3. If any of these products is over two years old, take it to Origins, too.
4. Check out the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database with your remaining eye shadows, blushes and powders. Are your products safe? Keep them. Are they more hazardous than you’d like? Make a list of safe products you’d like to shop for – there are great varieties in every price range. Then start shopping!
