January ended up being one crazy month with a lot of highs and lows for me. I thought I’d give you a quick update:
High
I finished writing my new eBook, Accidentally Green. (Look for its release later in the spring.) And I became a monthly contributor at one of my favorite green blogs, Live Renewed.
Low
After suffering through a week and a half with the flu, I finally got better. (Considering all the people I know who also had the flu – after they got their flu shots – I don’t regret refusing my flu shot at all.)
High
I didn’t buy food from a restaurant at all this month. This could be the first month in my entire adult life. I’m not completely doing it for health reasons – mostly for budgetary ones. But hey. Not splurging on restaurants at all definitely has helped save calories and cash.
Low
I’ve been grieving the sudden loss of my uncle.
High
Even with a schedule that was interrupted by sickness and funeral arrangements, I still organized, cleaned, and purged half of my basement. That’s huge. I put away all of my Christmas decorations, got rid of a bunch of stuff, and now I have the worst half of my basement to go. Bummer. At least I’m making progress, though. And I have a ton of things set aside for a garage sale this summer.
Low
Because I got sick, I didn’t get a chance to finish my goal list for 2013. I guess I’ll add that to my February to-do list.
Medium
I ran into my first challenge with my clothing fast. I’ve stayed out of clothing stores to avoid the temptation, and I guess it’s necessary to continue doing that. I did find some super cute T-shirts on sale for spring and was just heading over to see if I could find my size when I remembered my fast. I turned around, walked the other way, and realized this is going to be one long year if I continue with the fast.
I did buy two things, though: a pair of hot pink rain boots and a pair of red patent pleather flats. Both were on truly amazing sales, and I bought both with my Christmas gift money. I’m counting it as a belated Christmas gift to myself. And I let the footwear slide because I’ve been looking for rain boots and flats for the past three to five years. Now that I’ve finally found – and bought – them I can cross them off my perpetual shopping list.

If you're searching for ways to live a healthier life that honors God, yet you're not incredibly environmentally conscious, then you're in the right place. While I try to glorify God and use my ten years of journalistic experience to create a healthy home for my family, most of my choices just tend to be green ... quite accidentally. – Hilary

You’re awesome Hilary! A sale on red flats is worth the splurge!
I think I cheated a little on the clothing fast. My parents gave me a gift card to a store and the closest one to me is near their house. Since I don’t go there often, I used every single penny of the gift card on after Christmas clearance… several tshirts, a sweater and a nice jacket. So I did do some shopping, just not on my dime :).
Hope February is better for you and you enjoy Big Brother’s birthday fun!
I’ve been running into trouble with my Christmas/birthday money and gift cards, too. I reason that I want the gifts, and since it’s a gift it’s not like it’s a completely thoughtless purchase. Right? ;) Maybe we can just reason that the gift cards could expire before we are finished with our fasts.
The other really good thing is that you used it wisely on clearance items, so it wasn’t like you were wasting your money. :)
