Hi! I’m Hilary.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a wife, mom, and a writer. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in life, though, it’s that my dreams aren’t always the Lord’s plans for me. And while He has blessed me with marriage and children, it happened a lot later than I had hoped. Because of this, I had plenty of time to pursue a career in writing.
I have more than a decade of professional experience as an award-winning writer and editor for newspapers and magazines, but I’m not a typical journalist. For one thing, I’m a born-again, evangelical Christian, and I can assure you that you won’t find many of those in today’s newsrooms. I’m also not a typical in-your-face reporter. I’m quiet. I prefer happy news over depressing headlines. But I do love a good story, and I’m willing to get to the bottom of an issue if I suspect the truth needs to be shared.
When my first child was born five years ago, I chose to change my career and become a stay-at-home mom. But researching and writing had been part of my daily life for so many years and I missed it as I made the transition into full-time mommyhood. I began looking into common parenting decisions made in the first year of a child’s life, and was astonished at just how unhealthy many of them are. Aside from changing the way my family lives, I began writing Accidentally Green because I had to share the information I’ve found.
It so happens that many of the healthy alternatives I discovered also are fairly green, and that’s what makes me Accidentally Green. I set out to honor God and protect my family’s health, but being environmentally friendly never crossed my mind – until I realized most of my decisions were green. Quite accidentally. Instead of feeling compelled to help the environment, I’d rather try to protect humans by educating others about common and preventable dangers. After all, what’s the point of saving the environment if we can’t even save ourselves from an unhealthy world?
I enjoy presenting information fairly and accurately, so you’re equipped to make well-informed, healthy choices for yourself. Please don’t view this blog as a reprimand against certain decisions. My intent is to speak the truth in love, not judge others. But there are definite health risks associated with today’s conventional products, and many people aren’t aware of the facts. Some of the healthier options I suggest aren’t always the quickest, easiest, or most convenient. I know, because my family has changed the way we live as I’ve done more and more research – from being much more selective when buying food and personal care products, to changing our children’s sippy cups and dumping all our plastic food storage containers. It hasn’t been easy. But I do trust it’s worth it.
As a believer in Christ, I fully realize we’re not meant to live forever – and the information I share isn’t meant to extend anyone’s life. However, it certainly seems like more and more people are suffering from diseases like cancer or problems like infertility, and many of the issues I address are known to contribute to these conditions. Ultimately, my hope and prayer is that Accidentally Green will make a healthy difference in someone else’s life.

If you're searching for ways to live a healthier life that honors God, yet you're not incredibly environmentally conscious, then you're in the right place. While I try to glorify God and use my ten years of journalistic experience to create a healthy home for my family, most of my choices just tend to be green ... quite accidentally. – Hilary
